A lot to think about. After looking at the lists you both created, it looks like most of the determining factors for masculinity are things that you can purchase - cars, beverages, a certain look - so I have to think that there is a link between advertising and the extent to which a man feels manly. Do you agree? (I know that I compare myself to women in advertisements, size them up, and make judgments both about them and about me, so I wouldn't be surprised if men do something similar.)
ReplyDeleteI am also interested in the way that you rank your own masculinity - both before and after creating this scale - and if this exercise makes you want to increase your masculinity ranking. If so, what would you be willing to do to be more manly - watch more westerns? Go to a monster truck show? Trade in your favorite soda for a Bud?
Oh, and where does sex appeal fall in your scale? Or the treatment of women?
